Cysts are fluid-filled growths that arise in the dermis, the deep layer of the skin. Although they may become infected, most cysts result in minimal symptoms. Cysts are usually under 5 cm in size.
Lipomas are fatty tumours that grow in the subcutanous space, located between the skin and the muscle. They rarely cause symptoms and are seldom over 10cm in size.
Most cysts and lipomas can be removed under local anesthesia.
The National Cancer Institute has outlined the "ABCD" criteria for assessing the risk of melanoma in a mole. Lakeview Surgery Centre has a close association with Royal College certified dermatologists, who refer patients to the centre for surgical management of suspicious moles and biopsy-proven melanomas.
While many moles are removed for suspicion of melanoma at Lakeview Surgery Centre, they are often removed for cosmetic reasons at patients' request. The above illustration contrasts normal appearing moles with melanomas. Please consult your family physician or dermatologist if you notice any of the above suspicious signs in a mole.
